    Re: casting numbers

I just bought a 67 "427". I see on the driver side on the back of the engine the number 3969854. I assume this is the casting number. If so according to the Chevy Engine Casting Numbers Book it is a 402. If this is so how can I get information on that engine?

    Allen----

As a first step, I would suggest checking the "engine code" and vin derivative to be found on the engine stamping pad just in front of the right cylinder head. The "engine code" should be a letter "T" followed by 4 numbers and 2 or 3 letters(probably 3 letters, in your case). Post this info, and I may be able to help with further identification. Also, you will need to obtain the block's casting date. The casting date will usually be found on the bellhousing flange opposite the side where you found the casting number.

        Allen,

Yes, your block is a 402. (#3969854 was used lated '69 through '72 in all 402 applications.) Like Joe Lucia said, check on the passenger side of the block back near the distributor (basically just opposite where you saw the casting #) for the casting date code.

Also check the "pad" area of the block just in front of the passenger side head. This area should contains the "stamped" in 3-digit application code, build-date of the motor and VIN derivative of hte original vehicle it was in. Although the casting date may be able to pinpoint exactly what you have.
