    1959 Gauge Rebuilding

I need to have the clock on my 1959 rebuilt along with recalibrating the tach for generator drive. Is there anyone in particular that excels at this service. Any referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Clock Works does an excellent job on the clocks, reasonably priced and quick turn. Your local speedometer shop can probably recalibrate your tach.

If you have your local speedo shop recalibrate your tach make sure they know what percent of shaft speed to calibrate it at. I had mine done once before I knew there was a difference in applications and it has been goofy ever since. All of my pulleys were correct too. I ended up switching to the fuelie generator pulley to slow it down a little and now it's only about 300 rpm fast. Getting it calibrated right is on my to do list.

There are only two variations: cable speed and twice cable speed. Twice cable speed is used with a distributer drive for obvious reasons. If a generator driven tach is off, you need to be sure both the crankshaft pulley and generator pulley are the right size. The tach drive gearing is sized to output engine RPM with a 3-5/8" pulley on the generator. The fuelies that had the 4" pulley also had distributer driven tachs. Check the archives. There was a long thread on this subject with all the math included about a year ago.

          Ed,
Something to think about, i.e. "the tach was geared to a 3 5/8" generator pulley." Originally the '55 and '56 generator pulley was 3 3/8" diameter pulley. I would think the General first geared those tachs with those pulleys to be accurate. Regards,

Jim, yes I would have thought that to be the case, and perhaps the gears in the tach drive units were different on the earlier cars. If you can find that thread in the archives, all the calculations are there. I think John Hinkley provided the math. I have a NOS set of gears in my tool box that were purchased in the early 70's. I'll try to remember to count the teeth and pass the numbers on to you for comparison.
