    427 Big Block Numbers

Need a little help. Im looking at a 67 convertible, 427ci 390HP 4speed car with Air Conditioning. The suffix number the best I can read it is T1129IL. Just to the right of it as you are looking down at the number is the number 7106572 which matches the number under the Glove box inside the car on the Vin plate. Do these numbers, especially the suffix number indicate that this motor is correct for a 427, 390hp with AC. The Block number in the rear is 3904351. Any assistance would be of great help. Im told that this car is 100% correct, but I need to be sure. THANK YOU in advance, Mike Chase

    Re: 427 Big Block Numbers

Mike - this car's build date was Dec 22, 1966, per the WI chapter NCRS birthday calculator. The 11/29 engine assembly date matches perfectly for this vehicle assembly date. The IL code is correct for a manual transmisson 427 390 car, no AC, PS, or A.I.R (CA emissions K19 package). So all looks good so far, and the 4351 block is correct. Now, you need to go deeper, and look for the casting number in front of the starter on the engine block, and make sure it precedes the engine assembly date of 11/29/66 by at least a day, but typically a few weeks. This date code is a format such as B 23 6 for February 23, 1966 etc. You should also have someone experienced with stamp pad broach marks look at the pad for correctness....if you can get an electronic picture of the pad and email, it could be posted on another site for comments from folks in the know. There are lots of forgeries out there, especially 67 BB's to contend with...which depending on the price, could be fine depending on what your purpose for the car is.....also, you don't mention color and interior, but check out the trim plate as well. Then, you should see the transmission stamp on the drivers side mathcing the engine stamp pad serialization, showing simalar fonts and styles since these were done as a one/two whack. The rear end will also have date codes and suffixes on the bottom flange area of the pumpkin that will validate it is a correct BB rear, what the ration is (assuming original gears inside) etc. Lots to look for, I would insist on a thorough lift assisted check of the car if it were me...good luck! Craig

IL suffix means No air conditioning.
