    Spare Tire Lock - 1973

What is the correct part number for this lock? I have seen several locks that are supposed to fit but they differ in size; height and width, and surface finish; smooth versus wrinkled.

If you need this for judging you will need a (H) key lock and in 73 it must also work the security alarm and the glove box. It also has a rubber boot that needs to be ordered extra. I got an H key spare tire lock from Corvette Central but make sure you ask for it special . You will need to rekey so all three locks work with the same key. There is a way to remove the cylinder from the new lock and make it work with your key yourself or you will need a locksmith.

I have already purchased a used lock and re-keyed it to pass judging, but upon further study the lock does not appear to be for a C-3. The casing is about 1/4" too long, it does not fit in the rubber boot properly. The end that the key goes in is almost flat, not stepped up where the key goes into the lock. The surface is not smooth as shown in some vendors catalogs. The surface appears to have a wrinkle finish cast into it. It has no numbers on it.

You could well have a spare lock from the 'alternate' vendor (Hurd) that supplied other car/truck lines offering the spare tire lock.... For certain reasons, Corvette went with a single source supplier (Briggs & Stratton) on the spare tire lock (it mounted outside the car vs. in the protected area of the trunk) and want/need this version of the lock that's available from most Corvette catalog parts houses.

Bear in mind what was said earlier in the thread--you want an 'H' keyway lock. Starting in '67, lock permutations were increased by introducing a 5th tumbler/wafer AND the keyway itself changed from year to year. The 'acid' test for a correct '67 and later spare tire lock is that it operates with the glove box key AND attempts to insert ANY OTHER coded keyway key blank will fail (an H keyway lock should reject A, B, C, D, Etc. coded keys).

There's also a version of lock cylinders known as 'universals.' These are intended to accept any keyway coding including pre-67 key blanks which were 'uncoded'. If the lock has either a universal keyway or a locksmith has altered it to accept your particular keyway coded keys, it may fail the concours originality test (accepts the intended keyway and rejects all other keyways).

You might also try Joey Jesser at Jesser's Classic Keys, (330) 376-8181, www.jessersclassickeys.com - not cheap, but does excellent work; his NOS correct-keyway keys with the codes stamped on the knockouts are a work of art
