    58-62 Tool

I purchased the tool that tightens the flat ring nut on the light switch and wiper switch. The two "ears" that are suppose to fit into the two slots on the nut don't match up, the diameter of the tool is smaller than the diameter of the nut. Is the tool made wrong? Are the ring nuts worn out? Or am I doing something wrong. Anyone else had this problem. I have used the blade of a slot screw driver to tighten the nuts, but it usually slips off and scratches the paint. I am open to suggestions.

Why don't you ask whoever sold you the tool? *NM*

A pair of needle nose pliers will work. You may have to
      grind the tips a bit.

This tool is a spanner wrench that are available in numerous sizes. Who ever sold you the tool may have misunderstood the size necessary for the job at hand.

In a past restorer was an idea to make tour own tool from a piece of electical conduit or pipe. Select the correct diameter pipe. Cut away material leaving two ears that fit into the notches. I made a couple about 8 years ago and they still work fine.

That sounds like the best idea. The notches in both flat nuts are wider than they were 42 years ago and a custom tool could be made to fit the wider notches. Thanks for the tip.

If you're like me you've got a junk drawer in the tool box with all the old stuff that doesn't make up sets anymore. I found an extra 1/4" drive deepwell socket the right diameter and ground it on the bench grinder to fit the slots in the nut. Even if you have to go to Sears and buy one it's still cheaper than what the tools cost.
