    69 Muncie code question

    I have a 1969 M20 Muncie with code "P9P16"
    Can anyone tell me what the date is on this?
    I think the first P is for Muncie/The 9 is for 1969/
    The second "P" is what? I quess the 16 is the day of the Month.

    Jerry-----

    Yes, the first "P" refers to the Muncie, IN transmission plant. The "9" refers to the 1969 MODEL YEAR. The second "P" refers to the MONTH of the 1969 MODEL YEAR. For the 1969 MODEL YEAR, "P" decodes to September. The last 2 digits are, indeed, the day of the month. So, this tranmission was assembled on September 16th, 1969.

        Re: 69 Muncie code question

        We need to have just a little clarification here regarding Muncie date codes.
        Starting with the 67 model year, the MODEL year was added to the date code. This was the first number after the P at the beginning of the date code. The number is for the MODEL YEAR of the car, NOT the year the tranny was assembled! Thus, P9P16 translates to:
        P=Passenger Muncie
        9=1969 MODEL YEAR OF THE CAR
        P=Sept
        16=day of month
        THEREFORE-------------------this tranny was built for a 1969 car and it was assembled on Sept 16, 1968 (to go into a 69 model car)----------------NOT 1969.

          Tom,
          Your point is well taken - but I have seen cars near the end of a MY with transmissions indicating a build for the next model year and similarly early build cars with transmissions from the preceding MY, so this is not a hard and fast rule. For any model year (MY) than 1969, you are correct. However, 1969 MY Corvette and Camaro production continued for more than 12 months. 1969 MY Corvette production commenced in the third week of August 1968 and terminated December 18 or 19, 1969. The referenced transmission could have been assembled in September of either 1968 or 1969 as both were during the 1969 MY. One would have to know the casting dates on the transmission components to determine which year it was produced. If it was installed in a vehicle the VIN derivative stamping would also be a clue to which part of the MY it was assembled.

            And Terry, you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
            1969 WAS NOT a good year to give that example, because, as you say, a tranny (as well as some other components) for the 69 model year, could have been built in Sept 68 or Sept 69 (or Oct, Nov, Dec 69) for a 69 model car. Sorry about that. If it was built in those months (for 69) then it would be imperative to know if the car was actually assembled in 68 or 69.

            BUT STILL, starting with 67 models (first year a number for the year was included in the date code of a Muncie), the number AFTER the P indicated the year model of the car that the tranny went into. So if a 1968 car was assembled in Nov of 67, and the tranny was built Oct of 67, the date code would be P8RXX. Did I explain that right?

                Re: 69 Muncie code question

                F.Y.I. In mid 1969 model year, muncie build date
                codes received the A-B-C code to denote ratio.
                (Somewhere end of October to December 1968) Being
                that this trans build date doesn't have an A-B-C code,
                makes it an early trans built September 16, 1968 for a
                1969 model year car. Hope this helps--Crash
