Round tag for gear ratios on 57-62 rearends

I am specifically interested in the tag for the 3.36 ratio. ALLLLLLLLLLLL the info which I have seen indicates that the tag for a 3.36 ratio has 2 holes and the one for the 3.55 has one hole. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, ALLLLLLLLLLLL the 3.36 rearends that I have seen with what appears to be the ORIGINAL, unmolested, gross, crud covered rearend, has a round tag with ONLY ONE hole, which is the hole for the stud. I even have a customer's EXTREMELY VIRGIN 62 in the garage which has a 3.36 posi and the round tag (which appears to have NEVER been disturbed) only has ONE hole. Just last week, I pulled a rear from a 64 4dr Chevy in a salvage yard. It had a 3.36 and the round tag had ONE hole. After observing NUMEROUS rears with tags that have only one hole, I have come to the conclusion that the info and repo tags are incorrect for the 3.55 and 3.36 tags.--------------------Comments, Opinions?

      You are right on!!!!!!
I have been categorizing these tags on cars that I've been documenting since 1974. I don't care what GM's information says, or how they planned to do it--both on Corvettes and on passenger cars, the 3:36 to 1 tag, both for non-posi and posi is simply a round tag with the only hole being the one to mount it to the rear housing.

0K--------------------------IF IN FACT, that IS the case, then how do we go about getting the info AND the repo sources, such as Corvette Central, Late Great Chevys, etc, to make the change between the 3.55 and 3.36 tags??????????????????????????????

Re: Round tag for gear ratios I did

In 1991 Oct . again in straight Talk SACE I wrote about the Axle tag first before many new how to identifi the tags or even new about them. This informantion was taken from G.M prints charts in 1958 . I covered the cut out for each rear axle identification and showed they had only ONE hole held by the rear pumkin bolt. In the Mag. on page 12 it also shows all the paint markings on the frame, pinion, carrier and the paint circle around filler plug etc.And with in a year people were reproing them. And as always no one ever called me over all the articals I wrote like the one in the new Restorer I again brought to light in 92. But that said the past is the past , I'v stayed out of NCRS for many years ,and in just the last year I started showing my copper 55 bubble top Corvette.

OK. I'll bite, what does NM mean? Also, I presume you mean that One hole means that ONLY the 3.36 non-posi ratio had one hole in the tag. If so what did the 3.36 posi have? The 62 with a 3.36 Posi in my garage has only one hole for the stud and there is no question that it has NEVER been disturbed.

                Tom,
I agree with your findings. The rearend and tag in my car is original to the car. The tag when mounted on the pumpkin at the two o'clock position does not have any holes or angles. NM stands for NO MESSAGE!!Peter
