    Question on heater core replacement

I've bought a replacement heater core and gaskets from Dr. Rebuild and am now ready to install. After reading the Archives I see mention of a service manual detailing steps to replace the core.

Question is where can this manual be bought from? ... I checked the NCRS library and only see the Chassis service manual which I have. (This is a 1968 w/o AC)

It looks like 6 or so bolts on the engine compartment heater box will release the interior heater box. Along with the possibility of having to remove the right side dash to allow room to remove the heater box.

Any hints would be most appreciated.

    Thanks once again!

Re: Question on heater core replacement

    Steve,

For 1968, and most years until later '70s, there were two major Chevrolet Manuals. The Chassis Service Manual & the Chassis Overhaul Manual. The Service manual basically deals with on the car work: adjustments, remove, replace and electrical items. The Overhaul manual deals with on the bench work: internal engine, transmission, brake caliper & master cylinder rebuilding.

Thus how to remove the engine is in the Service manual and how to put in rings, bearings and camshaft are in the Overhaul. To adjust the valves and carburetor is in the Service manual. There are some items that don't fit into that rigid structure, but for the most part those are the deviding lines.

The information you are looking for regarding the heater core is in the Service manual. The guys in Cincinatti may be out of stock on one or the other from time to time, so both may not be listed in all their advertisements.

    Good luck.

Steve, just a comment from my own experience. After obvious things like hoses and the like I dissasembled the engine heater box as you mentioned and was able to take out the heater with no great difficulty. Made repaired the heater and reassemblied in reverse order. Don't forget gaskets. I have a 70 base engine manual car which has a lot of space near the heater box to work on, could be a little different in yours. Hope this helps a little. Roberto NCRS #30019 RMC
