    Fibreglass repair

I started doing some fibreglass work using cloth and resin to repair damaged areas on my '57 transmission cover. All went o.k. and after sanding it was quite smooth but you can see all the repaired areas, they appear darker than the original fibreglass. Since this area is not painted, is there any way to color the resin to blend in better with the unpainted areas? This would also apply to the under-floor areas. Thanks.

You may want to try a boating supply store and see if they carry gelcoat that would match closely

      Brian,

I've wrestled with this "problem" for some time. I've tinted both the regular resin and white geloat using pigments available from boat repair outlets. They come in small bottles in various colors for only a few bucks each. If you can't find a gelcoat to match, try a white gelcoat and add a MINUTE amount of yellow and possibly brown to achieve the original shade of "coffee with lot's 'o cream". I use white pigment tinted as above to color the repair resin, but the exact mix is dependent upon the color of the base resin as well, and is a secret...even from me. I get close, but it takes some experimenting. Good luck.
