    63 harmonic bal.

hi,my 63 is a 300hp L75 but had a L76 ce short block installed in 1968,the harmonic balancer is the small 6" 2 piece low hp balancer, the timing tab is 1.2" away from the dampner,my question is what balancer can i put on (7"-8") and will my pulleys be out of line?is there a cheaper alternative to the finned 8"?..thanks, ian

You have a couple of options. You can install the larger balancer. I don't believe it will effect the alignment of the pullies. You have to determine which pullies you have. The 340 and 360 HP pullies were designed for a wider fan belt. They are thicker. The 300 and 250 HP pullies are thinner and will accept power steering. Power steering was not available in the high horsepower engines. If you have power steering the larger balancer will hit the power steering mounting bracket. You can also change the timing cover. Covers are available for the smaller balancer.

Ian - The balancer on my '63 L76 is the 8 inch without the fins. Joe L. set me up with the GM order # and the local chevy dealer had it in 2 days - 80 bucks.
