Re: C-1: Draining Steering Box
Don,
My 57 used to leak before I pulled it out to rebuild. If you can get the cover off, a lot will drain out. The rest will be hard to remove. Use a Turkey baster to suck a lot of the remaining out, then get some old sponge material and soak it up with that. As for filling with Chassis grease, when I rebuilt mine, the kit included a special bolt that was a 1/4-20 bolt that had been drilled through the length, then drilled and tapped at the head end for a grease gun fitting (sert? (sp)). One of the cover plate mounting holes goes all the way through. When you remount the plate (with a gasket) then put that spl bolt into the hole that goes through and fill with chassis grease using a grease gun. Leave the filler top off to vent and when full, simply replace the spl bolt with the standard bolt and tighten, replace the filler cap and you are in business. If this is not clear, email me.

Re: C-1: Draining Steering Box
Why do you want to do this? Just top it off with 90 weight gear oil.
Most C1 owners would be happy to be in your position - a steering box that holds oil. Most of them are self draining.
90 weight gear oil and grease are not incompatible. If what you wish to do is get some grease in there, you don't need to get the gear oil out.- Top
