C-1 Steering Box is LEAKING #2

Earlier I asked for help re: '62 steering housing leaking from housing cover gasket. I was wrong, after further checks I discovered the leak from the sector shaft packing seal attached to Pitman Arm. Has anyone removed retainer packing & sector shaft seal while steering box is still in car? My engine is out and I'm praying I don't have to pull everything out with steering system. Thanks for any help. Don

Useing a SMALL hose and a suction pump at the filler nut is about the only way I know.Even removing the side cover will not get all of it with out a pump.

      Don,
I do not think that it would be very easy to replace the seal with the box in the car, but I am sure it could be done with enough determination. The sector shaft would need to be removed and then the seal pulled with a hook. You could not drive the seal out due to the lack of space between the outboard side of the box and the inner fender. Pulling the steering column with the engine out would really be a pretty simple job and should not take more than a half hour or so if you have a steering wheel puller.
