Where the bolts for the rear end cover of a 67 black with black washers? I have begun to restore my housing (Unfortunately a previous owner replaced the original with a 67 big block 3.70 FA 5-16-67 rear end -- I have a L79 with March build date) will I take a heavy point hit for the big block rear end? I don't want to have to pay through the nose for the right housing. --- Also, The rear stut rods are said to be black or blue/gray -- does anyone have a recomendation on a paint to use to get the correct color. Thanks as always. Keith

Re: Rear end Bolts
Keith,
The dating and markings on the diffy arent judged as per the NCRS manual. I dont know about the correct bolts, but I'm interested in the answer you get. Same for the color of the strut rods. I'm in the process of re-doing mine, too.

Re: Rear end Bolts
Bolts were Black Oxide, lockwashers appear to have been "pickled & oiled" after heat-treating, resulting in a dark, although not entirely black finish. (More of a dark grey). The biggest problem from a judging standpoint in using the BB rear end is the axle Yokes. If you use the SB Axle yokes, which retain the U-Joint bearings with a strap, rather than a cap as used on the BB you'll be ok for most judging purposes. The problem with the lower strut rods is that you are trying to duplicate oxides created on the surface of the part during the forging process. They are not "Painted" in original form, and thus are hard to recreate. essentially you are looking for the appearance of a blue-black oxide adhering to the rods in a non-uniform manner.- Top
