    Distributor set up...

I know this has been hashed out repeatedly, but I have kind of a unique combination and looking for advice...

    '61 283 fresh rebuild w/ '151 cam and orig '946 distrib / 4spd / 3.36 / will be driven.

    stock 283/230 can is 7.5* @ 15-16" I believe
    327/350 can is 16* @ 7" I believe
What should I run with my hybrid?

Also, in an archive search I see mention of a bushing on the centrifugal advance pin. Should I have one? I do not currently. (I will be setting up cent. adv. on a distrib machine FWIW).

What shaft end play clearance is right for this?

    Thank you,
    Karl

    Re: Distributor set up...

Assuming you have a single point distributor (I don't know from the part number.), run the L-79 vacuum can. The NAPA/Echlin VC1810 is functionally and visually equivalent to the GM/Delco "236" can except for the lettering on the bracket - "236-16" for the Delco can - "B28" for the NAPA Echlin.

All single point distributors should have the same advance limit bushing, but with age they break and disintegrate - Borg Warner DG3, also use the high breaker arm tension points - Borg Warner A112P or equivalent. Be sure the breaker plate is wobble free. Ff at all suspect replace it. Lubricate the upper bushing grease well (BW DG12 if you need a new felt washer.) The plastic seal should be reusable. Shim the end play to two to seven thou. GM used to offer six and thirty thou shims, so some combination of these would get you in the range.

You can order all the BW parts at Pep Boys and NAPA Echlin should have the same goods, but I don't have the part numbers. It's all the same parts - just different packaging.
