C1 Master Cylinder Numbers

The passenger side of the mc has casting no. 5456022, beneath which are:
(1) 272 (with a screwhead symbol preceding and following
(2) 1" diameter
(3) D8
Question - is the 272 a Julian date code? is the D8 a date code?
There is no part no. on the front end of the tank. Does this preclude the mc being original to this early '58?

Every time that I have asked,I have been told that there is no date coded on a C1 M/C. The plug in the end should have the part# and 320G on it. The lack of these #'s probably just means that the M/C has been rebuilt somewhere in it's life and had the plug replaced. The M/C that you describe looks like the correct one for your car, as eariler models used a "233" casting # and later cars used the large "022" M/C. You might want to check with Tim Mickey to determine the possible point deduct for the end plug if any. The numbers could be replaced, but it would be pricey and probably not worth the minor deducts.
I have a small 022 M/C on the shelf, and the D8 is on it with a 324 with a screw head. I a guessing that the Number with the screw head next to it just identifies which tooling the part came from.
