On a 70 convertible, the rear wheels are off to adjust the parking brake. When the wheels are turned, there is a click forward of the rear end. It happens about every quarter turn of a rear wheel rotor. Any ideas on what it is and how to diagnose/fix it. Thanks

Re: Rear end click
There may be nothing to fix, Jeff. Jack up the rear control arms and put stands under them to keep them at ride height and repeat your turning test. Chances are that the noise will go away. The rear axle assembly is not designed to operate at the fully extended position and this causes the half shaft ends and u-joint flanges to make contact. If the noise is still there, it may be a bad u-joint as was previously suggested.- Top

Re: Rear end click
Jeff - as Gerry points out, it may be halfshaft flange/yoke interference. Joe Lucia posted on this last year sometime, and many of the aftermarket shocks extend beyond the design specification of the original GM/AC Delco shocks, allowing this interference to occur at full extension. While this is not normally a problem, I prefer to use the Delco shocks which still maintain the original length extension specifications....Craig- Top

Re: Rear end click
Jeff,
So it doesn't sound like a particular wheel, but something common to both sides? Perhaps have a look too at your parkbrake cable set up as it may very well be rubbing against the driveshaft,or even the pinion cover of your posi may be ever-so lightly dented and hitting up against the nose section of the case when the pinion rotates.
Bear in mind too that a lot of things don't work or sit just the same when the weight is off the driveline.
Quite often a lot of these unknown sounds exist, yet we never know about them until we have to put our ears up close to them.
Failing all that, simply turn up the stereo in your garage or ask your wife talk about post-Christmas shopping sprees!
