Is there any way to bench test a speedometer before installing it. I have speedo & cable out of car.

Yes!
You'll find there were hundreds of independent AC-Delco and United Delco located across the country and MANY are still in business. Those who specialized in doing speedo/odo repair have, in-house, the GM approved calibration/test equipment to support the work. We've got a really nice shop in Denver who's been doing this for about 50-years and it's a matter of carrying in the speedo, waiting 24-hours, and picking it up repaired and calibrated! Typical cost is $40 + parts, as needed.- Top

Thanks Jack
But, Maybe I should have explained myself a little better. The speedo has been laying around for some time (It worked years ago) and I just wanted to see if I could test it at home to see if it isn't locked up. Can I spin the cable somehow to see if the Needle moves back & forth? If not, then maybe I can hook it up and lay it in the car somewhere and drive down my street.- Top

Steve
I've heard of the drill thing but It might screw up the odometer gears. My car doesn't have the "original" mileage anyhow, best I can tell! The odometer that is in the car stopped at 58,000. But then again, how many older cars out there have the true original documented mileage?? I just sold an 81 that I bought off orig. owner with 9,000 miles, but I didn't have much documentation on it. Oh well, I'll just hook it up and if it doesn't work, then I'll take it out and send it somewhere. Thanks for the reply....Rich- Top

Re: Yes!
You can get a short length of speedometer cable and plug one end into the speedo, the other into a drill. That will tell you if the speedo works and it will not hurt anything. If you can spin the drill at a constant 1,000 rpm, your speedo will read 60 mph.- Top

Re: Yes!
Well I tried the drill thing over the weekend on the speedometer. Results: Odometer + trip meter working OK. However, speedometer does fine up to @40 mph and then starts whining and then pegs at 160 mph and gets real noisy. I guess it is time for a rebuild. Any good vendors recommended and approx. $$$. Thanks in advance Rich- Top
