    C-2 Exhaust Tailpipe Dislodgement

We have been trying to dislodge the exhaust tailpipes from the exhaust header pipes at the joint in front of the frame crossmember pass-thru. Problem is, how to loosen the pipes since assembly occured with some material at the joints to prevent exhaust gases from escaping?

Someone mentioned using a butaine torch to heat the pipe joints. Is this a good idea without an asbestos cloth to protect the nearby fiberglass and insulation? Since asbestos is a baaaaad thing nowdays, what else would be usefull for protection? Is there a method to seperate the pipes without using heat?

We are working with the car on jackstands.

    Thanks in advance for help.

Kent - there is a tool designed to pull the pipes apart, I bought one at Carlisle this year. Eastwood also has a similar tool...it clamps the pie on each section, and, using a wrench, you spin two opposing bolts to extract the pipes. It can also be used to assemble the pipes when tight as well. No heat required....I sent you an email, I can attach pictures if you respond...Craig

If you do not intend to re-use these pipes, may I suggest a saws-all, with a metal cutting blade. Sure is better than using an open flame around fiberglass, oil and gasoline!

Jack, I plan to continue use of the same pipes ... they are in wonderful condition since they have a little more than 600 miles after total restoration in 1994. They are the only ones I've ever seen fabricated to match the originals with the tail pipe and extension pipe welded to the muffler as one piece. This is the reason for asking for help seperating them from the exhaust pipes that extend from the manifolds to the mid-cross member.
