i have a 66 roadster with a pretty nice laguna blue paint job, when i looked at a friend's 63 the windshield moldings stood out as shiney and smooth, mine are dull and in some spots pitted, the question is can these be refinished without taking them off the car, with what, and how to protect the paint, thanks

Re: 66 windshield molding refinishing
Joe, I don't think there is any way to get them buffed without removing them from the car. I don't think the removal is overly complicated. I would contact a local auto glass repair facility to get some help. Then you need to find a polisher/buffer, probably better to get a reference. I also believe some of them advertise in Hemmings. Good luck.- Top

Re: 66 windshield molding refinishing
I took mine off my 65 cpe and buffed them myself. used electric drill setup on stand and red rouge&white buffing compounds. It is slow work but you just keep buffing away and they come out nice. Don't work real fast, but keep the trim piece moving. Afterwards wash off in warm soapy water. Guess you could mask off the trim with lots of tape and leave it on the car if you were real caeful with the drill and buffing wheel.- Top

Re: 66 windshield molding refinishing
I would take the car to a good auto glass shop and have them remove the moldings. You can send them off or buff them yourself. If you have a good bench grinder or better, a drill press, you can get a pretty good buffing kit at Sears. You need a hard wheel and use the white compound on stainless. The same rig will also keep the family silver polished and take Granny's monograms off your sterling flatware.
Once you buff them or have them buffed, let the glass guys reinstall. The glass guy I use at my shop charges me $25 per window to R&I the moldings and that includes resealing the window. I wouldn't touch them for that money. Too much chance of bending or breaking something.- Top
