    gauge cluster removal C-2

I am removeing my cluster to be restored and install a new wireing harness. I have everything loose, but I believe I will have to lower my steering column to remove it. Should I seperate at the rag joint, or get a wheel puller and take the cone off? Thanks and Merry Christmas! Ray

Ray - I was able to remove the cluster by lowering the steering column and loosening the steering coupling so I could pull the wheel back about 3 inches. I also removed the steering wheel. Take your time and note where each wire goes. Once you've pulled the cluster out, the wires tend to snap or pull free, leaving you with some detective work.

Ray, I just put mine cluster back in today. Make sure you have disconnected your oil pressure line. I always separate the rag joint as it is only two bolts. Be sure and use some masking tape to mark you steering wheel alingment and that way you won't have to later pull the wheel for fine tuning type alignment.

I took mine apart at the rag joint and completely removed my steering column. Also a good time to replace all of the plastic bushings in the clutch/brake pedal assembly (if you have a manual transmission). To do that you need to take the pedal assembly loose from the firewall. Good luck! Also, a good time to freshen up your instrument cluster.

I am not a mechanic...and I replaced all of the harnesses in my '66 roadster in two weekends. I hope you have small hands!!!

          Ray -

Get some 1/4"-20 allthread from the hardware store (or long 1/4"-20 bolts and cut the heads off) and use them to replace the five cluster attaching screws as you remove them. After dropping the column (and disconnecting the speedo/tach cables and the oil pressure line), just pull the cluster back toward you and it will hang nicely on the allthread or bolts while you disconnect and mark things so you know where they go when you re-install it, again using the allthread or bolts to hold it in place for connections.
