    77 storage boxes

My 77 had 3 empty holes in the storage/battery box covers. The AIM is not very clear, but the owners manual indicates that one of the boxes is lockable. Is it optional or would the center glove box always have a lock in it? I assume if there is a lock, it is keyed the same as the doors? Thanks Steve

The center compartment in the 3 compartment system used from 1968-77 always had lock provisions. However, I believe that the key use changed over the 69-77 period. For those applications in which the ignition and door locks were the same square key, the rear compartment and spare tire locks were the round key. For those applications in which the ignition only was the square key, then the round key was used for doors, rear compartment lock and spare tire lock. I don't recall what the arrangement was for 77.

Joe, Thanks for the quick response and the guidance. My 77 has a square ignition key and round door key - so I'll get a lock and have it re-keyed to match the door. Steve

Actually, Joe, it's the passenger side compartment that has the lock. I believe the 77 is the same as my 78 with the round key working the storage lock, spare tire and door locks (and the glove box that started in 78.)

In that case, there must have been a change in the rear compartment locking configuration sometime in the mid to late-70s. C3s through 1972, at least, have the locking cylinder only for the center compartment; the 2 side compartments (battery and jack/storage) have a keyless pushbutton only. I didn't think that this configuration changed until the 2nd design 1979 change to the 2 compartment design. However, it may have changed earlier with respect to lock installation. If desired, the locks can be installed on any of the compartment doors. Other than the keyed cylinder, the rest of the system is the same for all compartment doors.

Early C3's with the factory alarm also used the round key.

Square key -- Doors and ign.
Round key -- Center compartment, alarm, spare tire lock.

My 1977 Top Flight has the lock in the passengers side compartment. The car was Top Flighted at Stone Mountain in 2001 and performance verified at Ashville, NC. in 2002. The build date is June 22, 1977. It is locked with the round key. If the car is to be fligt judged you might investigate the key. The knock out blank should have the correct code numbers on it. There are a number of vendors that can make the correct key and knock out code.

The lock moved to the outside storage compartment during 1972 production. the present judging guide lists the center lock until at least SN 6357. If anyone can provide newer information, please forward to Chuck Berge, 1968-72 Team Leader, as he is working on manual update.
