Big Block Stamping

Can anyone confirm that the big blocks assembled in Tonawanda (65...) were stamped before the heads were installed?

Yes -- the Tonawanda assembly date and code went on before the heads; otherwise the plug of the head would not allow a good straight "whack".

This is described in the Restorer Vol 18 # 3, in an article by Terry McManmon.

Chris,

I know a fellow with a '65 BB Coupe here in Seattle that is documented all factory original & unrestored. His engine date code appears to have been applied after the head(s) were on the car since as the plug prevented centering on the pad. All the correct broach marks are present. He said that a number of people have disputed the off-centered stamp, but he's VERY particular about his cars, and swears if the real deal.

I dont know about the heads but I have seen the stamps all over the place & almost never level. Bill
