    C1 Gas Tank Vent Hose

    In looking at various sources, the AIM, ST-12, and parts catalogs I have seen a variety of ways to route the gas tank vent hose on a 1962 after it comes thru the body grommet into the gas filler pocket. Mine currently routes under the filler door bracket and down thru a hole in the lower left corner of the pocket. I've seen other illustrations that show the hose cut off after it enters the pocket adjacent to the grommet with a wire clip also next to the grommet. Does anyone know the correct method for routing this hose? Thanks for the help, Chuck

    Chuck;
    The hose is supposed to be cut off in the gas filler "pocket". Another hose fits on a nipple located in the drain hole, similar to those for the trunk edge drain holes, and hangs down near the frame. I made my hoses long enough to go beyond the frame.

      My 60 comes into the filler thru the grommet and turns straight down and ends inside with a clip holding it pointing down. I think the newer ones come in
      and vent right back out to the rear. (Wait for one of the experts to follow up.)

        Correction

        On a 62 it looks like it comes in from the rear and terminates inside as well, across the top of the filler neck.

            On the 61', The vent hose comes thru a grommet located on the (rear) side of the gas filler opening, A clamp is attached to the bolt (facing down)that holds the top of the gas door assembly. The hose extends a little past this clamp. Be sure and attach the drain hose to the nipple "before" you install the gas filler neck to the tank, for you can only reach it from inside the gas tank dept.

              Re: C1 Gas Tank Vent Hose

              The drain hose from the drain nipple in the fuel filler housing extends straight down and passes through a hole in the underbody with a 1" (approx.) rubber grommet (which was left out of the A.I.M., at least for '56-'57). If you just let the drain hose dangle without exiting through the grommet, the fuel spillage when you gas up (or make a right turn) drains through the nipple, collects in the underbody cavity (instead of dribbling out on the road), and generates the famous "C1 Gas-In-The-Cockpit" smell.

                Thanks guys for all the advice. Now I'm going to have to remove the gas tank cover and install the drain hose as my car never had one. Sounds like a lot of gas has ended up in this body cavity. Anyone know a source for the 1" grommet the drain hose goes through?

                  Re: C1 Gas Tank Vent Hose

                  John, I have been trying to figure out the reasons for that "C1-gas-in-the-cockpit" smell for sometime. Per the recommendation of others, I now refrain from filling up the gas tank to full, I had the tank filler hose clamps checked, and I replaced the older gas cap (the old one's rubber gasket was hard and dried out). The situation has improved, but I have been confounded by the occasional but continuing smell. After following this message thread, I inspected the underside of my 59 and sure enough - there was the one inch opening (without a rubber gromet) and no drain hose protruding through it. Is removing the gas tank cover the only way to get at the cavity for replacing, or installing, the drain hose? Thanks. - Kevin

                    After replacing all "other" rubber parts, I finally replaced the gas cap with one from Autozone, not NCRS correct, but no more gas smells in the cockpit. Just my $0.02

                      Thanks guys, between Chicago Corvette and Dr. Rebuild I now have the nipple and drain hose. Anyone know where I can get a grommet for the drain hose? Thanks, Chuck

                        Chuck -

                        Ordinary one-hole rubber body grommet - measure the size of the drain hole in the underbody, and the Doc will have the one that fits.
