CARBURETOR LETTERS

Hi,

I am in the process of decoding my car, all numbers match per the NCRS SPEC GUIDE, but the letter designation under carb's, where as it states mine should be a MV ,I have a FV. The carb is a Rochester 4-bbrl, the car is a 1973 L-82 COUPE W/AC AND 4 SPEED. Any clue anybody?

Greg -

"MV" is the standard model code for all Q-Jets used on Corvettes from 1968-1974; what you're looking for is the part number, which is stamped vertically on the driver's side just forward of the rear corner - yours should be #7043213. There will also be a 4-digit Julian date code (day of year/year) stamped on the side of the carb baseplate adjacent to the left rear attaching ear.

Thanks John, you are indeed correct and the date code is there as well, I thought the FV meant it was not correct to the car. Now I am a happy camper knowing full well that my car will pass inspection in this area. You made my day, thanks again!

The "FV" is most likely the original 2-digit Broadcast Code for that part number carburetor, which would match the one shown on the build sheet (the ever-elusive Chassis Broadcast Copy, not the tank sticker).

John, you got me on that one and I work for GM. Chassis broadcast sheet vs tank sticker/build sheet? Please tell me more about this type of document or where I can find additional info about them. I was going to drop the gas tank and most likely will, but I have not heard of the chassis broadcast sheet ever being available or included with any car as there is no place to put it as it goes down the line.

The "tank sticker" (Corvette Order Copy) showed how the car was ordered - color, trim, options, etc. The Body and Chassis Broadcast Copies exploded those specs against the Bill of Material and showed the assemblers exactly which individual parts to put on the car for that car's particular combination of specs. This was strictly an internal plant document, and they were removed and trashed before the car got to the end of the line. Article in an upcoming "Restorer", possibly the next issue.

That is exactly what we do with them at my plant. Actually they go by way of QC for review and then after they have gleaned them for data they toss them in the trash. I thought you were implying this document made it out of the plant on a regular basis. So, with that understanding they would not only be elusive and rare but moreover priceless.
I will look forward to the up coming article. I wonder if any or how many Vette owners have one, can't be many? Anybody out there have one?

Where did you find the letters "FV" on the carb.? If these letters were stamped into the part # pad, then they represent the Rochester plant where the carb was manufactured. Mine (for a 69) is "DH". I am not familiar with the letters for your year.

The FV stamp is A-OK, please read the earlier post's and replies.It was right where it should be, vertically-on left or drivers side of the carb body with the date code.
