    C1 water pump

Could someone advise the part number for an original equipment water pump for a 67 327/350, and is it still available? My engine overheats after about 10 minutes of idle. The engine is a new rebuild. The radiator is a DeWitt aluminum. The vacuum advance bulb is correct. I don't have access to an "IR gun". The water pump is a rebuild and may not have the correct capacity. The thermostat is 180.

John-a correct, dated water pump ,casting # 3859326 is available thru such vendors as
Chicago Vette, Corvette Central & Paragon. My old catalog lists it for $140.00. Ascertain first that you indeed have an overheating problem first before replacing
any parts.Faulty senders are a common culprit.

The '326 water pump casting, IF it's a correct/original unit for Corvette is reasonably rare and valuable. To check:

      (1) It should have a 1/2-NPT hole drilled and tapped in the upper boss for the external bypass feature vs. the same casting in 'truck' configuration with a larger 3/4-inch hole.

      (2) There should be no evidence of a 3/4 to 1/2-inch reducing sleeve being installed.

      (3) Body should bear a casting date that agrees with other bolt-on's associated with your engine (intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, Etc.) as date casting on this water pump began somewhere around Nov 1965.

      (4) Body should be a Saginaw vs. Tonawanda casting meaning no floating 'T' emboss in the area of the casting number/mold identifications.

If it passes these checks, you have a pretty rare original water pump that can either be rebuilt by a specialty house (some advertize in Driveline--go figure $50-85 plus S&H), preserved for the future (do NOT trade it in as a 'core'!!!) or sold to another Corvette enthusiast (can fetch $100 & up).

Yes, you could have a slipping impeller in there, but that's the exception rather than the rule for aging water pumps. A full rebuild will solve this issue.

For driver application, you don't need the factory/original 'correct' water pump. There are non-GM generics as well as GM 'similar' pumps available rebuilt, ready to bolt on from your local auto parts store (NAPA, Pep Boys, Etc.) at pretty cheap rates (figure somewhere around $40).

Last, it'd be nice if the e-mail address you've given didn't automatically reject message traffic. Sometimes, folks on this board will attempt to go off line with you....
