    63 Borg-Warner transmission yoke

    Godd evening Corvetters,
Just installed my engine and correct transmission (Borg-Warner 4 speed) back into my '63 Corvette. Previously the car had a incorrect Muncie 4 speed. When trying to install the drive shaft could not get the shaft to fit into place between the transmission and differential yoke, marginally too long. Could the transmission yoke I reused from the Muncie be too long when fit into the back of the Borg Warner to be used in conjunction with the drive shaft? Does the Borg Warner use a different transmission yoke than the Muncie?

    Thanks,
    Michael Gill

Yes, it does. The 1963 T-10 yoke was GM #3818916 and it was discontinued many years ago. I think that it's available in reproduction, though.

Yes, the Muncie and the BW T10 take different yokes. The Muncie has a "fine" spline (26), while the T10 is coarse (16? I forget.). They are available from at least some of the usual Corvette parts vendors. That's the good news. The bad news is that they're around $175.

They come up on Ebay from time to time, usually going for less money. You could also try a driveshaft shop. They could be less there.

Whatever you do, make sure you get the long one that's specially made for Corvettes. There's lots of coarse transmission/driveshaft yokes out there for lots of other applications. But only Corvette took the long one, which makes them scarcer. The short one will work. But, with the short one, you'll soon get vibration at speeds over 50 mph and you'll destroy the rear transmission bearing/bushing.

I believe you'll also need to change the U-joint. That's OK. You'll be going back to the original one.

There is also a Fine spline version of the T-10 mainshaft that will accept the Muncie Yoke just fine. The length difference ended in '63, the longer versions were used only thru '62
