    71-72 GM# 3991399 Water Pump

A few weeks back, I participated in a discussion on the board which touched on the subject of the 71-72 GM casting #3991399 water pump. This pump was used, reportedly, for at least part of the 1971 model year small block engines and, reportedly, for the first half or so of 1972 production. After that, it was replaced with casting GM# 330813 which was used to the end of C3 production. The 3991399 casting is unique in that it uses the large bearing and associated 3/4" shaft AND this pump DOES NOT HAVE the large, by-pass fitting on the top of the pump as do all 330813 castings which are relatively common. In that regard, the 3991399 casting is similar to the '608' casting used with 70 and older pumps with small shaft and without external by-pass provisions. The 3991399 pump is relatively rare inasmuch as it was apparently used only on Corvette small blocks during a very short time period. It was discontinued from service in late 1973 and replaced by pumps with the 330813 casting. It is POSSIBLE that the 3991399 pump casting was also used on some heavy duty trucks during the 71-72 time frame, but I haven't been able to confirm that as yet.

Based on the experiences reported by some members with '71 small block cars, it appreared to me that, perhaps, early 71 cars used the 3991399 casting but with the shaft pilot turned down to 5/8"(like 65-70 big block pumps)and the small, 1-1/4" bolt pattern hub like all of the pre-71 pumps.

Well, I've finally resolved this once and for all(I think). Today I was fortunate enough to acquire an NOS GM waterpump with the 3991399 casting. This is a complete GM assembly in the original GM box. According to the label, it was originally delivered to a Chevrolet dealer in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia from the Englewood, NJ GM parts distribution center. This pump uses the 3/4" pilot and large pattern water pump hub. Most interesting of all though, it has a casting date of C201, which makes it the oldest 3991399 casting I've seen. I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the box. Needless to say, this water pump will occupy a hallowed place in my collection.

    Joe,

    Thanks for the update.

Remember, though, that my H 12 0 date is still the oldest... :)

Since "no one" knows of an earlier date, is it possible it is a prototype?

Joe, I would just like to add my comments to the above water pump subject. I have a very early '71 (#788). It has the 3991399 pump date=F200, 3/4" hub and no bypass fitting on top.

Also, thanks for your reply to my exhaust gasket question.

        Re: 71-72 GM# 3991399 Water Pump

Joe, I have two '399 pumps. Both from '72. The one that's on my '71 now was pulled from a 6/6 build '72 SB that went under a semi trailer and was totalled with 28K miles on it. It had a 3/4 inch shaft with 5/8 tapered end and small hub with 1.75 inch fan bolt spacing.

The other '399 pump I have (hot spare) came out of a local water pump rebuilder's core barrel. It bears a 4th qtr '70 cast date. It too had 3/4 inch shaft with 5/8 tapered end and small 1.75 inch fan bolt circle.

Looks like we're covering the '70-72 water front with at least a small sample size....

          Jack----

          A few questions:

          1) I don't understand the '1.75" water pump bolt spacing'. I am only aware of two different water pump flange bolt spacings. The "small" pattern used 1.25" center to center bolt spacing and the "large" pattern used 1.5" center-to-center bolt spacing. Are we talking about, perhaps, just a difference in measurement methodology here?

          2) I'd be very interested in finding out the GM part number of the water pump pulley that came with the wrecked car's 399 pump.

            Re: 71-72 GM# 3991399 Water Pump

Hey, Joe, where you goin with da gun in youur han....

            (1) Spacing terminology for water pump/fan flange bolt pattern is

courtesy Fred Oliva taken from GM Part dwgs. Hang me if da

guys in Warren measure different from us! (joke) Fan clutch

was purchased part item (Eaton, Schwitzer, AC-Delco) and had

to agree with water pump flange bolt pattern.

Early clutches (small 6-inchers) are spec'd as having a water

pump bolt circle pattern of 1.75 inches. Later clutches (bigger

fellas with +7-inch cast housing) are spec'd with 2.125 inch

bolt circle pattern. My micrometer agrees, IF I read hole center

to hole center diagnonally across. In the change over period

'71-'74, water pump hubs were dual hole pattern drilled to accept

fan clutch, pulley with either pattern (if the internal of the

pulley hub would accept the larger diameter on the dual pattern

            pump flange.

            (2) Sorry about info on the '72 'shorty' SB A/C coupe (went under

semi early in life). It gave me many good original parts and

there are a few BowTie Shark guys around the country with it's

dated hoses, belts. BUT, once I got the '544 alternator, the

'399 pump and a number of misc items here/there, it got chopped

up trailered to Bloomington and parted out two years ago. I

didn't need/wasn't interested in the main pulley because I had

the factory original on my '71. I just pulled the '399 pump

core, rebuilt 'er and am driving it today. Fit and worked A-OK

on my April '71 SB A/C roadster....
