archive search

[Doug F.]

i have never liked or understood the archive search, for instance, today i looked up 53 engine block and here is what came up, am i doing something wrong?

Doug and everyone else who has trouble with searches. READ THE FAQ. Quality searches are an Art Form. You are searching through 589,000 posts with from a dozen to a good page of words in each post. Let's just guess that would be about 25,000,000 (25 Million). Trust me if you search on Corvette you will find 29,350 posts that have that word. You can not search on "the" "it" or other very common words because they are in almost every single post. For that reason you can't search on any word under 5 letters except this list that we created just for US.

Read the FAQ think about what the FAQ recommends to expand and limit your searches. You may have to search three of four times to see what works best to narrow your search down to a managable list of posts to look at. Do a search and look at the results. The words you searched on are highlighted in the posts. Think about other words that might narrow it down or other words that mean the same thing that might widen the search to include what you are looking for.

Don't give up too easily and just blame the system. Just like Rob did above, formulated the search correctly and found the information Doug was looking for.
