Something is wrong in the archives

    Gary, Rob,

I think something is turned off in the archives- the photo links. I just noticed this recently.

When you go to an achived thread prior to March of 2008, the photo links and thumbnails at the bottom of post are gone. This is not the way I understood things when we made the switchover to the new forum.

I thought we were supposed to preserve the photos no matter where they were posted, with the threads. I thought that is the way it worked when we initially started the new format.

Someone spent a lot of time importing the photos to the NCRS server that were previously posted on image sites, and linked them to the original post when it was posted.

If I go into my User Profile- Attachments, it has every photo I have ever posted on the NCRS forum going back to 2004. It also lists the thread in which the photo was posted. However, if you click on the thread in which it was posted, the photos no longer appear.

This inability to access the photos from the archives, somewhat makes the archives useless on some threads prior to March 2008.

I hope the computer gurus take a look into this. This is not how I remember viewing the archives just after we did the switchover, in fact, I was amazed that we had preserved all the previous photos with the threads.

Something has recently changed on this, believe me. The photo links have seemingly been turned off in the archives.

    Gerard,

I have more or less confirmed your information about the photos in the Archives. I don't have enough of my own photos in there to pinpoint a date when they seem to break. If you could find the earliest post that the photos you have that still work, and the latest post that they don't work it would help me to see if there was an event that has caused this issue.

The only change to the Tech Board that has been made in the last 3 or 4 months is to increase the allowable attachment total for each user. Several members were being denied the ability to upload attachments due to the old limit. I raised the limit to 10 times what it had been.

I don't know how this might have affected the older posts. I don't think there is any relation but there may have been.

      John,

      Thanks for looking into this.

Here's a shortcut to the latest thread in which the the photos don't appear:

      https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthread.php?t=58423

      (February 2008)

In all posts earlier, the photos do not appear, even though the photo's appear in my User Profile Attachments with a link to the post in which it was posted. There must be some 500 photos posted prior to Feb 2008.

I noticed that it is not only my photos which are missing, in posts by others prior to Feb 2008 where photos were posted, the photos do not appear in the text or as thumbnails at the bottom.

As I remember, just after we did the switchover, the photos posted in the text were gone, but the thumbnails at the bottom always showed.

Even though I have some 788 photos in my attachments, I still don't have a problem with posting new photos.

In the next post, I'll give you the earliest post in which the photos still appear. (March 2008). I just can't get there from here.

        John,

Here's the earliest thread in which the photos appear as normal:

          John,

Here is another example of the problem, take a look at this thread.

          https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthread.php?t=80234

The member had a problem that could have been answered by the archived post, but the archived post had no pictures of the solution. I just happened to catch this thread, so I posted the archived thread, then realized the photo links were gone. Because the photos were already in my attachment folder, I could not upload copies. I had to post them one by one from my attachment folder. I could not find a way of just restoring them to the archived post.

The archived thread is dated only Jan 20, 2008. I have the link to the thread in with my attachment listing and can go to thread from there. But once in the thread I can't get back to the photo.
