Picture Upload Breaks Internet Connection

Lately when I try to upload a picture from my computer to attach it to a thread my internet connection breaks. I have found that if I by pass the router and connect the modem directly to the computer the picture will upload without breaking the internet connection.
I do not know much about computers, but if someone can tell me what to do to correct this I can get one of my sons to help me.

Larry, reconnect everything, recycle the power/reboot the modem (cable modem?), then the router and then the PC and try uploading your photos. If trouble persists - try another router. You should be able to look at the router log to see if it's showing an error after a failure. Call the router tech line. Gary....

Yes it is a cable modem. I thought maybe there was some setting I should change somewhere. I will try another router. Thanks for your help.
