    Re: Spelling

What a great subject. Sorry but I didn't read many of the responses as supposed to be working (playing).
I am a cross word puzzle fan. Not that good at them but I do try. Spelling in general seems to be getting worse. Not just here but everywhere.

I love micro soft word as when you hit a typo it goes nuts. Very helpful.
Nice to see you all are concerned about spelling. Todays youth though worries me as they don't seem to be able to spell.
The PC does everything for them.
Now besides spelling how about English grammar. Whew!!!! I seen a 63 with...... Yuk. Keep it up guys/girls. Need more good posts like this.

Keep a dictionary on your desk. I have about 2 dozen various ones in many languages as I cheat trying to do the NY Times puzzle. JD

      WOW!!!
I just read through this thread and it looks to have "got away" for lack of a better term. The only real place misspelled words bother me is, in MY own posts!!
I am having trouble finding how to use the spell check (that works in the TDB) with the tools tab at the top of my page.
      A little help here...
      Thanks,
      Lynn

        Re: Spelling

In college I took a Business Management class. We were required to type our weekly papers. The teacher use to deduct 5 points on each of my papers due to all the spelling errors. He once stated (didn't ask - stated) "Mr. Banas, good thing you type - I can't tell if you can't type or can't spell."

I could type 60 words per minute - and back in those days they use to calculate typing speed as five spaces equalled a word and a "typo" was a deduction of 5 words.

I repeated this story at the instructor's retirement party in 2001. It was a big hit!

OK, guys. Am I the only one to find humor in the mispelled words? Let's cut us all some slack. That, and encourage the youngsters to read, read, read.

            Chuck ,

I noticed that also . I did not say anything either because, although it was in the wrong context , the word was spelled correctly , and this post was about spelling !

In helping Vinnie (and Terry also) go over tech articles for Restorer, I am amazed at how many people are using vice grips to hold a grill bracket.

Incidentally, when you come to the convention in Charlotte next July, note that Embassy Suites has GRILLE misspelled on its restaurant name.

Now I will quit playing the teacher. But it has been interesting to see that many of you agree with me on this.

Thanks Reba and Duke. Our language is the only tool we have to communicate, and when we don't use it correctly, we cannot be effective. One of my pet peeves is the conjuction for "you are". I've seen it used in this very thread. Since when did the conjuction for "you are" become possesive and change to "your." I always thought it was your tool, your car, your house, your ignorance to spell "you're" your. Come on guys, this ain't texting on your phone, this is typing on a qwerty keyboard that has all them thar fancy keys with funny symbols on 'em. Jeff Foxworthy would love to get a lot of the people on this and several other boards on his show to highlight the intellegence of the fifth graders. Let no child be left behind, so that when they are adults they won't know the difference. And I'm not even a teacher.

Thanks Kurt. Your right about the "you are" stuff. Without being redundant, I should say that it also always bothers me, too. But, ya see, only, like, it's not a conjuction (conjunction), it's a contraction.

I always thought that the word "tool" was synonymous with (in addition to some people who frequent this Board) a penus (*****?). It is also slang for: "someone who is easily duped or used".

                            Spell Check For Your Posting

Here is what I have done to hopefully take care of my spelling errors on the TDB. Hope this helps someone.
When I click on the box to post a new thread, it gives me the box to type in, that is surrounded with little icons (the smiley faces,etc.). I am not sure I always had these, but after my wife was "helping out", I think she turned on some toolbar that gave me these icons. One of the icons on the top right hand side has an "abc with a check mark". At first I thought OH here it is. First time I tried to use it , it opened up a download page for something called iespell for internet explorer. I downloaded the option on the first line, then saved and ran it. I read somewhere in there that after it was installed, I should be able to right click on what I wanted to spell check . I am not sure I have it working with just the right click thing (I have yet to reboot, so I am not sure about this), but I do have it working by clicking on "tools" at the top of my page, and then the line that says iespell. It lets me run the spell check on my post. I tried this already on a new post and it is working. Maybe the right click thing will work after I reboot, I am not sure of this. I know this is not too technical of an explanation, but let me know if you have problems with this and I will try my best to help.
                            Lynn
