    Re: Spelling

All my life I thought my spelling was the pits, instead of making an error I always looked at my dictionary. As I got older and computers and spell check came into being I used them. After I retired I found my spelling was not as bad as I thought, I just lacked confidence. I found that not using spell check has made me a better speller. I would like to talk longer, but my calculator went on the fritz and I need to bone up on the use of my abacus. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Betsy: Organizized? Don't you mean organized?
Travis Bickle: No, organizized. It's a joke.
Betsy: Oh, like those signs that says, "Thimk".

Speaking as one of the illiterate hoards who never achieved the obvious level of education that you apparently have been privileged enough to have received I thank you for your input and pointing out our obvious shortcomings. However I would submit that the arrogant and somewhat demeaning nature of your thread does very little to serve the community and in fact does not belong in a TECHENICAL discussion board. Perhaps your local gossip columnist page or social skills web site page would be better? I don't know maybe it's just me but I thought this site and the NCRS was about the cars and a community spirit not busten chops! Have a nice day and relax life's getting shorter by the second.

I have Firefox spell check and it seems to automatically correct my spelling errors. I always preview my posts to ensure that my grammar, sentence structure, spelling and punctuation are correct. I try not to have anyone think that 5th grade was my "senior year"!

              Kenny,

My thoughts exactly, what a bunch of bull. They must not have much to worry about. Well this uneducated moron is going back to working on his car, if I can find my way.

I am an avid reader and have begun to find "except/accept" and "effect/affect" and other words misused in publications.

I also know that some school systems do not emphasize writing as they once did. Before I retired, the trend in high schools was to encourage students to get their ideas across, and as long as they could be understood not worry about grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Later I taught remedial composition at our local community college, where my classes consisted of students who could not pass the entrance exam for English 101.
I had a college professor who wanted us to let it all out. Like Jack Keroauc, "On the road", just write, don't interrupt your creative process with the rules of the game. Music too; warm up, practice and then watch what happens.

Fortunately, I also had teachers, perhaps like you, thank you, who grounded me to the English language and I became better for the experience.

I have difficulty reading the daily newspapers with professional writers taking much more poetic license then they deserve and kant spel to!

I have a Corvette with problems so this qualifies as a TB rant, I tink.

I won't correct the syntax, punctuation, and other spelling errors.

Living in a multi cultural country I have to be able to speak Greek, Italian, African, Vietnamese, Lebanese, English, Mandarin and native aboriginal. If I can't do that I have to be able to at least know the swear words. Try writing arabic or Cantonese if you think english is difficult. Stewy

"English" (and other language names) are proper nouns and should always be capitalized... or is that capitolized?

                      Where's Reba?

BTW, language is a tool, and like any other tool, it should be used properly or problems will follow. Trust me on this!

What's a Noun is that a person, place or thing. So what's a common Noun is that any noun you do not spell with a capital letter. I better go back to Uni I must be the dumbest surgeon in the world LOL. I can't write on paper with a pen how's that it goes everywhere. Thank god for a key board although I haven't mastered that either. Dyslexia is not something you should pick on Duke I was born that way. Stewy

I wanted to let this thread die, but I just read your thread, As a poor speller, I often use words that I could spell , rather than the word I wanted. Poor spellers can verbalize their thoughts, but have difficulty in writing it down because of spelling.

Filling out a job application or other type of form was agony for me and well as many people who have learning disabilities of which I am one. My thread was not to inhibit posters ,but to let those who did not know of spell check , the availability of that tool.

That negative posts on me in this forum and others came as a surprise. I don't think poor spellers are writing those . If your read my first post I emphized my inability to spell and how the spell check of the computer age has helped me.

I guess you're new to forums, Jack...My opinion is that negative posts aimed at other posters are minimum on this board, but that isn't true on other forums as Duke said. The reason is the TDB stays pretty much on topic with Corvettes, with a little diversion to other cars, and related areas. I have seen that to allow general off-topic discussion without limitation is to allow chaos.

As soon as you express any thought publically that may tread on someone's personal attributes, feelings, beliefs, etc., I have found you're in for a storm on the internet. While I am sympathetic with your original post, and winch at the terrible grammar and spelling I see here, I never express any dismay because we're all doing the best we can with what we have...I hope others are doing the same for me.

It is the people that use language in their jobs to communicate misspellings and bad grammar to the general public that have no excuse.
