Re: Load Pictures

The key to linking a photo from an external site is to prefix the image URL with a "" tag in the text of your post - then that image will show up full-size in the post.

However, as Gary noted, the linked photo will not be archived on this board; the tags noted above simply "call" the image from the external hosting site onto this one when someone views your post, and the linking "call" expires when they move to the next thread.

Images uploaded directly from your hard drive (using the "manage attachments" routine) are actually uploaded here and remain here; they appear as a thumbnail in your post, and pop to full size when clicked on.

Rick,

You can insert a picture in the text from the NCRS photo archives.

First upload your picture using "Manage Attachments" either from your computer or photo website. Then when you see the image name or thumbnail in your post, right click on it, and select "Copy shortcut". Then paste that shortcut in the text using the Insert Image icon.

This gives you both the thumbnail at the bottom, and the full size image in the text. Here's a sample, my first car:

You can only put 3 photos per post this way.

Jerry,
Well, I think I got the picture thing down but now I need to control the size, even though I used John's resizing site. I would rather see the photos stacked, than one alongside the other.
The other issue is that the text gets scrambled among the photos.

I think you have it down, Rick.

If you want to separate the text from the photos, try a few returns, set the cursor where you want the picture to appear, before you hit the Insert Image icon.

Nice pictures, and now you have them preserved on this site.

Have fun and see you in San Jose.

Like this:

All I did was right click on the thumbnail in your post above, hit "copy shortcut" ( which saves the link or shortcut to my clipboard), then in my post I hit the "Insert Image" icon, backspaced over the http/ and pasted the link to your photo.

Give it a try.

Re: Load Pictures

The new photo feature of the Board makes things so much better.
However the size limit reduces some of its best benefits.

Sometimes questions require one to download a photo, enlarge, lighten, ect. by a software package in order to verify items which in gereral can not be done with the low quality photo's.
Are there any future plans to upgrade the photo end of the DB software? More memory, more memory, .... Hay give a little and we want more, more, more.
The new DB is so much better - so this is not a zing.

NEW Picture Size

I just made a change to the setup to allow up to 2,000,000 byte photos as attachments. That should be about 1.953 MB.

I checked my camera output and most pictures were in the 1,400,00 byte to 1,700,000 byte size. That is at 4 megapixle resolution. Camera will go to 12 MP but that is only useful if I were making Poster Size Prints.

The software on the server will resize the photos that you upload to less than 100,000 bytes on the fly so it should not put any undo strain on the server. I will be monitoring over the next couple weeks to see what our storage is doing.

Re: NEW Picture Size

Thanks John,
The added feature should help a lot from what I have been reading.
Assume your software will not be saving the larger files (<2MB), but only the reduced ones at the 100K size. If you can find a way to store the larger ones they may be very useful in the future.
Again THANKS!

Alan,

I don't think there would be many situations where the <2meg picture file would be of any use. I wouldn't rule it out completely but for web based pictures this is about as much data as you can show on a monitor. If there is a minute detail in a photo that needs to be shown then the photo needs to be manipulated from the raw image before it is uploaded. Crop out just the section with the detail and make it 800 x 600 pixels.

I know for magazine publishing Vinnie Peters wants the raw image with no compression to give the best possible image he can print. Web pages are a different medium from the print medium.

I took a look at a several different online magazines to see the sizes of their photos. Time Magazine, People Magazine and National Geographic Magazine. Time and People used images in the 500px x 400px size range with 35kb to 55kb files size. National Geographic used larger 1024px x 768px for their Desktop Wallpaper photos. Size 144kb. These were the largest photos that I found.

We have a finite storage space available and we hope to have this Tech Board and other interesting resources available for a long time to come so we have to plan not to fill all of our space too soon. I don't want the job of going back and deleting pictures because we don't have room to grow and still keep all of the old ones.
