    A question for everyone.

Since we are all about preservation and originality wouldn't it be a good idea to have a permanent thread "sticky" on the quality of some for the reproduction parts out there?

I think it would be a great benefit to the members in helping them choose where to find the most authentic parts for their cars and avoid the hassles and expence of returning poor repops. I would also think that the replies would be unbiased since we are not sponsored by anyone.

What do you all think? Would this be a benefit or not really worth it?

NCRS does not take a stand on the correctness of parts. There are as many opinions on whose what is better as there are stars in the skies.

Repop quality is also a moving target. As tooling wears the part degrades etc...

Plus, many of the parts catalog houses obtain their parts from others in the business and periodically change supply sources for the same generic part listed in their catalog under their PN. Bottom line, such an effort (quality stamp a part/source) is both against NCRS official policy and it's akin to hitting a moving target!

          Okay..it was just a thought.

I wasn't thinking that the NCRS should take a stand or make it policy to endorse repop parts. All the replies would have still come from regular members. I just thought it would have been nice to have a "sticky" with what we know are "correct" or good repops versus those that are not so good.

All the same info would eventually be in the archives anyways but I just thought that a "sticky" would make it much easier to find.

Hmmmm...maybe I'm just too lazy this Easter Sunday...I think maybe I should get off my butt and go and put some more of my chassis back together now(tail between legs).

          Hoppy Easter everyone! ....get it..hoppy..

            Hi Greg,
I can understand the wide range of problems that having a list like you suggest might generate.
In an IDEAL world, cars would either be PRESERVED, or (are you ready?) RESTORED by restoring ALL the original parts on a car and finding NOS parts, or used original parts that need to be restored.
In this IDEAL world there would be no need for reproduction parts and all restorations would take 20 years to complete.
            Regards,
            Alan

If people on this forum would post a pic. Of the part they bought or can post a pic. Of the part they think is correct or ask to see a pic.of the part , they would save money in restoring a Corvette because there is so much knowledge here it could save them 25% of restoring their Corvette.
To many people relies on a part number and not the design (look) of the part.
I see many parts on Corvette having the right part number but wrong as to how it should look.

Frankly, I think the stickys are anoying. Lots of forums , and this one already has its share started, have a bunch of stickys at the start. You open the page and have to pan down to get to the meat. So, Lets make a sticky of the stickys and only have one.

Greg, I was with you until you got to the "R" word.
Yes, I'm a purist for originality at "Practically" any cost.
I also realize that some original parts simply are not available to us...Practically, that is, just how much is one point worth?
I agree that a photo archive of original parts could be beneficial to us as restorers (As well as to those who may use the information for purposes other than pure restoration.)
My experience has taught me it is best to identify and know the characteristics of the original piece then it becomes incumbant upon the individual to find the Repop that most accurately meets this judging criteria.

                      Greg,

Your idea sounds good to me. A data base of "accptable" reproduction parts would be a big help to many members. There are parts such as: carpets, door panels, seat covers, seat backs, window glass, exhaust, etc, for which reproductions are the only viable option. Having a marix listing parts and a recommended source(s) would be beneficial to everyone. This would not be an NCRS list, but only a members recommended list for use by the board members only. Thoughts???

The C1, C2 and C3 Registry has a vendor rating system which could be used for this. At lease in writting (it doesn't support pictures yet)...
