National and chapter membership renewal

It's been a real fiasco this year. Maybe it's time to go back to checks, envelopes, and stamps.

Last Saturday, Jan. 6, I went online to renew with PayPal. I did the chapter renewal first and got to the page with the chapter listings and saw that the SoCal chapter has an icon to pay online (Central CA chapter did not, but I'll get to that later.), so I clicked on the icon and completed the payment. The confirmation said it went to CCC, not SCC. WHAT?

So I go back through the process and notice that CCC does not have a payment icon, and when you click on the SCC icon you have to choose between CCC and SCC and CCC is the default!

I contacted the membership chairmen of both chapters and the CCC chairman said I was the eighth person to get tripped up on this. I hope it's obvious that a payment icon should be added to the CCC listing so when you click on the proper chapter the payment goes there and not to some other chapter.

Then I went to renew my national dues. There was some blurb about how I was not set up for automatic payments, which is what I want. I NEVER use automatic payments for anything!

So I pay my dues with PayPal on Jan 6, get a confirmation from both PayPal and NCRS and on Monday Jan. 8, I get a notification from PayPal that an automatic payment of $45 was sent to NCRS, check my credit card debits and, sure enough, there are two $45 payments to NCRS one Jan. 6 and the other on Jan. 8.

Can someone arrange to refund the second payment and get rid of the automatic payment for my account.

After several complaints we are looking at how the Chapter Join/Renew works. When you go to the Join / Renew page you are shown the chapters your Zip Code indicates you live in. In the case of Southern and Central California chapters the Zip Codes overlap as they are not that precise.

The text at the top of the pages clearly states you must choose the chapter and year you wish to pay for.

Please select the chapter of choice and calendar year for which you want to pay the dues.

This system has been in place for several years, and until this year we have not had a big issue. There have been a few instances but not to the extent we have seen this year. We recommend to all chapters to send out renewal notices with a link directly to renew their chapter. Like everything else there are some who don't bother to read the training pages we put together for the chapters. This is also not a problem for the majority of chapters who do not overlap Zip Codes. As far as Automatic Renewal we will refund your extra payment. You had to select the check box for automatic renewal at some point as it is not the default. It is an option that has to be selected. To cancel your recurring membership payment subscription: 1) login to the Store www.ncrs.org/shop/ 2) click on My account at the bottom of the page 3) click on Member Subscriptions tab 4) click on Cancel

We did find a bug that did not take you to the chapter you selected from the contacts page. That is now fixed. If you click on the Join/Renew icon beside a chapter name on the contacts page it will take you to the Join / Renew page with that chapter selected regardless of the chapter closest to your Zip Code.

Also changed the text in front of the chapter selection box to magenta and changed the text to make it a little more clear that you need to select the chapter you wish to join / renew.

Hopefully that will help in the future.

Thank-you John and CCC and SCC. I received a refund from CCC and the national for my redundant membership and yesterday renewed with SCC.

I'm still confused on the automatic national renewal status. I went through the steps you stated, but hesitated on clicking "cancel" because I do not want to cancel my newly renewed membership.

Can you go into my account and make any necessary changes to eliminate automatic renewal? I don't want to screw it up.

Your automatic renewal is cancelled. You will get an email a couple weeks before your membership expires next year. You will be able to renew manually. Make sure not to select the box for Automatic Renewal.

Thank-you John! I received emails from PayPal and NCRS that automatic renewal has been cancelled. Hopefully both national and chapter renewal for 2019 will go smoothly late this year.
