anyone have any "hints" on doing a title search pre- 1980 in Ohio? I know the seller dealership (now closed), then the next owner is early 1980's

Try contacting the Clerk of Court for the county where the vehicle was purchased. The clerk of court is responsible for recording vehicle titles. You can also try the Ohio BMV.
