GM called and said they were diverting it and replacing the order with a twin car that I would get several weeks later. Turns out Dale Earnhardt got the original car.

I would say some behind the scenes monkey business went down with your order. Possibly somebody else offered a lot more more money for your car and they got it instead of you. Hard to say. Might have gone to a Denver Bronco !!

The difference between my scenerio 2 and your deal is, I was getting cars diverted to me that nobody else wanted, your order was just the opposite. 84's, back in 84 were like gold.

Here's my quess, and it's only a guess. Your dealer may have been a small dealer who could not get an 84 order placed. They made a deal with the Denver dealer to get the car from them. When the Denver dealer found out he could get way more for the car, he kept it and sold it for more money. It has happened to me many times. ( Pace Cars, Grand Sports, ZR1's ) Not saying for sure that's what happened, but that could be one scenerio that would be a possibility.

Did you ever get a new 84 ??
Tom, you may be correct. The dealer I ordered from guaranteed in writing MSRP. It was a very small dealership who usually got one Corvette per year. Months later a friend did get an order fulfilled from the dealership. That dealership went out of business about 20 years ago. I lived in Indianapolis at the time and a Chevy salesman friend told me their first '84 was purchased by a Dr.'s wife for her husband for Christmas---$45,000.

    Thanks,

    Steve

My father ordered a '76 in August of 75 in Springfield, Va. By the time the car was built (in March of 1976) he had moved to Salisbury, Maryland to accept another job. For that reason the car was delivered to the Chevy dealer (the only) in Salisbury. I don't recall what was involved in having the car's delivery point changed. I offer this as another possible reason for the selling dealer differing from the delivery dealer. Dave.

Case in point you could order a car in Michigan because you had a buddy that worked their and it could be shipped to a Dealer in California. It would be called a Courtesy Delivery and the delivering dealer would collect the dealer prep fee plus like 100 dollars from GM for doing the Courtesy delivery. Saw it happen many times at the dealers I was at. There was a selling and a ship to dealer on the window sticker.
