New 1971 Sold to a Canadian

I own a 71 corvette that I have been trying to find the original owner. The dealership that sold the car new is close to the Canadian border in Michigan. If the car was sold to a Canadian would Canada or the province where the owner lived have a record of the original sale and owner? The reason I ask is I know Canada seemed to keep better original records of new cars sold. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Applegate Chevrolet in Flint, Michigan. I have contacted the dealership and they don't have records that far back. I even ran an add in the local paper for a month to see if anyone knew the car--no luck. It's an LT1 that I traced back to 1978 in California but the dealership that sold it went out of business. I even got a hold of the dealership owners and they kept no records. I contacted Ontario thinking they were the closest province but they didn't have records back that far. This was the last idea I could come up with for trying to find the original owner. Thanks Paul

        Hi Paul,
Sorry, I misread your original post. I thought you meant the dealer was in Ontario. In 1971 a Canadian could not buy a new car in the States and then bring it back across the border. The person had to live in the States for a period of time before they could bring the car back with them to reside back in Canada. The original owner must have been living in the states when he bought the car and may have sold it before returning.
I don't know if you could do a serial number search with the motor vehicle department in Ontario or if it would be a waste of time.
        Sorry I was no help.
        Kind regards
