Re: 63 Rear Suspension Pamphlet
Alan, According to this there was an early " slip fit " spindle, and a late " press fit " spindle, each requiring different shim thickness. It tells you how to do the math to figure out what thickness you need. It doesn't mention anything about the makeup of the shims, just the thickness required. If the spindle is " early ", torque the nut to 50 lbs. If it is " late ", then torque it to 100 lbs.
I gotta believe this pamphlet is something that was handed out to the mechanics only.- Top

I have one of those in my collection. I'll dig it out if nobody else has one handy.

Re: 63 Rear Suspension Pamphlet
I think it was part of a Chevy Communication kit that contained sales, parts and service information.
Most had film strips, service literature and an internal magazine.

Re: 63 Rear Suspension Pamphlet
The shims I question are the 3846595-6-7-8 These are used to shim the Torque Control Arm.
The 63AIM does show a change to these dated around 3-26-63. At that time the diagram is of the fixed two hole shims so it does appear to be that those shown in your pamphlet are the earlier ones.
Note the bolt, pn 3846867 also had been changed, AIM Sect 4 sheet 5.00.
Your picture on the front is a good reference to the old stuff.
But the information is superfluous since other members confirm its a real document.- Top

My car was built 3/18/63 and still has the early shims as shown. I scanned and printed the entire document. This should prove to be a good addtional resource for me when it comes time to put my trailing arms back together.- Top

The original 1963 shims were configured approximately as seen on the cover of the brochure and were of GM #3819810, 3819811, and 3919812. These were discontinued from SERVICE during January thru March 1964 and replaced by the shims you mentioned. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Gary------
These are the GM #381981x shims. However, it's possible that there was another design even prior to these. Somehow, I have a vague recollection that there might have been some sort of cast iron shim used at the outset. I'm not, at all, sure about this, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 63 Rear Suspension Pamphlet
Those pamphlets and many others came with the Jam Handy Communications kits -- like Bob Jorjorian said. I am pretty sure I have the whole kit around here someplace.Terry- Top
