Wheel Covers 68 &/or 69, midyears also, Restoration?

Any one have any luck restoring the Wheel covers for a 68 or 69? These are the full-wheel cover with the finns (ie not Rally).

And what about any of the Midyear wheel covers? = Should I just by a new-good-repro and be done with it?

I know that original Covers for the 53-55 years can be redone quite nicely.

    Regards - Tony

    Anthony,

I'm not completely sure about this, but for 1966, I don't think there are any sources for reproduction wheel covers. However, I believe there are reproduction spinners being made for 1966. A few years ago I was looking for wheel covers for my 1966 and discovered that originals were my only option. I don't know if that's still true for 1966 or not. I'm not really sure what's out there for the other years you mentioned. I think there might be reproductions being made for 1965.

I always encourage people to try and keep ORIGINAL parts on their cars, even if it means doing a little restoration. Some times that's not always possible because the parts are way beyond restoration and can't be saved. If you can't find replacement originals at a reasonable price, then reproductions might be a good alternative, provided they're being made for the year you're looking for.

Tony try to restore your original wheel covers. Not sure about 68-69 but the mid-years are pretty easy to do. First you have to disassemble the wheel cover, strip any old paint, and then you might have to sublet the wheel cover out to remove any dents. Then polishing is next with painting to follow (most corvette supply houses have the correct color). Then just assemble and your all set.

        Tony,

How 'bout some pictures of your wheel covers so we know what we're talking about here?

I am restoring a set of '66 wheel covers now. No repops available, but spinners, inserts, and the gray paint for the areas between the spokes are all available. They look pretty good, and with the Firestone SS bias ply goldstripe tires and original dated steel wheels, I will not lose many points vs. the repop knockoffs and goldstripe Coker radials I had on it.

Lets try this for a pic....but the size limitations for attachements will likely limit your ability to zoom in close and see details

                Tony,

I have done a little restoration on the 68/69 finned hubcaps. I would call it more mixing and matching. First I purchased some hubcaps on ebay to get started as I did not have any PO-1/2 and always like how they looked on other C-3's. As I'm sure you know, the PO 1/2's have 3 parts. The base that attaches to the wheel and has the black paint, the finned portion and the crossed flag hub. The 4 that I originally purchsed had some good parts that but not enough of them. I purchased 8 more hubcaps off ebay and started taking them apart to get the best parts. I was able to touch up the black paint based that did not have curb rash or dings. I polished the center area too. I used the 4 best finned cones out of the 12 I had looking for ones that did not have corrosion on the finnes. I purchased 4 new crossed flag hubs to complete my restoration.

You can see pictures on a previous thread at https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...24116&uid=7410

                I hope this helps.

I re-painted the wheel covers on my '66 about 6 years ago and they still look great with over 10k miles on them.
