    A212CW Filter screen

Were the "squares" on an original A212CW air filter suppose to be on an angle or are they more like the L88 type, i.e. more horizontal/vertical in nature.

    Thanks,

    Bob

Both style screens were used for the AC 212CW. The early models were bias ("angled"), "soldered wire" style screens. These lasted through ABOUT 1969. From ABOUT 1970, the screens were "horizontal/vertical", "soldered wire" style screens. At some later time, they went back to bias configuration but using an "expanded metal" style construction.

The AC 212CW was used in Corvette PRODUCTION only from 1965 through the 1972 model year and, during the 70-72 period, was not used for all applications. It was not used, at all, after 1972. So, as far as Corvettes are concerned, I believe that all of the bias, expanded metal style screens would be considered a SERVICE filter if installed on any 1965-72 Corvette.

Thanks for the quick, detailed, response Joe. Sounds like the one I have pictured below would not be correct for my 66.

I won't rule out that a "horizontal/vertical" screen was EVER used prior to 1970 and, perhaps, even at the very beginning of usage of the 212CW. However, the filter pictured is not one of them. It uses the much later style filter element material which is much "whiter" than the "yellowish", oil-wetted cellulose material used for original filters.

What you are looking at per the picture has other differences also, the "W" in the part number refers to an "oil wetted" filter, which generally carries a more yellow shade in the paper area due to the oil. Also, the wording on the top changes thru the years.

              Bob -

You're looking for an element that looks like the photo below; soldered round wire mesh on a bias, and yellowish oiled filter paper. Paragon used to make a pretty good reproduction, but their source went out of business; originals are now VERY expen$ive.

Thanks for the additional info, and the great picture. I can definitley see the diagonal bias to the squares.

I wasn't going to necessarily get it for judging puposes, more so just to make the top end look a little more "cosmetically" correct.

The repro houses sell a diagonal version, but it is made from more of a diamond shaped flat metal material. I thought this one might look a little more cosmetically correct to the casual observer.

                  John,
I thought that photo looked familiar and when I checked my photos I discovered that the inner part screen is different from the outer part. In other words, the outer is diagonal and the inner is horizontal/vertical.

You can still purchase an AC 212CW from GM under GM #6421746 or from Delco under AC 212CW. For non-judging purposes, it will appear as close to original as you will need.

                      Bob,

Here is a picture of a 212CW that I believe is correct for 1970. It came with parts from a 1970 LT1 I purchased a few years ago from a friend and I believe it's the original.

Any recommendations on how to imitate the yellowish look of the original filters?

                            Jody,

Is there more text on the top of the filter? If so, do you have a photo that shows the other text?

The yellowish color results from a couple of factors: (1) the general age of used original parts from the era, and (2) the oil 'wetting' process used to 'dope' the filter paper.
