    1963 roller gas door bezel

Can someone help identify if one of the fuel door trim bezels pictured is 1963 only for the roller door. I have the thin latch style on the car and am not certain it's correct, seems to work well though.

Also pictured is a 66 fuel door I think is original and it shows the coloring of the black and white flag as I know it has been discussed here in detail. The chrome is not bad for a 42 year old part.

    Thanks in advance, Tim

Tim, the lower bezel with the wide striker in your 1st pic is the one used with all roller style 63 fuel doors.

I hold here in my hand my original Bezel (July 63) which was used with my original lid which is a slide latch type. The bezel looks exactly like the one on the bottom of the two in your picture. My repo, which I have used since the mid 70's, has a slightly wider catch on the bezel, similar to the bezel on the top of the two in the picture.

It's possible that there was some overlap on the change for the fuel filler door and the change on the bezel.
The 3797386 bezel, shown below, is the 1st design and was to be used with the roller style door. The change for both door and bezel probably occured on the assy line some time in July and that's why Stu's 19,xxx car has the early bezel with the late style door.

As I recall, and now looking again at my old bezel, it was hard to open and shows a lot of nicks and gouges as if it had to be forced - specially during winter months. If it indeed was a mismatch, that might explain why I beat it up so much in those years. My current repro has a positive snug latching, but not excessive such that these old hands can't operate it easily. I also have one of those rubber fold out flaps to protect the body while refueling, and it has worked well 30 some odd years (no tears or deterioration).

            Thanks Stu and Michael,

It figures because the bezel for the roller door is the one I need and there is a deep stratch I don't think will come out. If anyone has a correct roller bezel I need one. Thanks again, Tim

Can someone help me determine the correct part number for the fuel door on a late 1963. The unit on my car is a 38144041, which was deemed incorrect at a recent NCRS NW judging. (Shown in above JPEG) I see a number in various catalogs claimed to be a correct reproduction as 3797378.
Please shed some light on this. Thanks, Gene Kahn

Gene, what is the build date of your car? Unique to 63's they have early and late parts not cars. An an example some early parts lasted one month and some other early parts lasted 9 months so a build date or VIN will help answer your question. But, if you have a July built 63 it should not have a roller door.

Gene, Your car is cut and dry as far as the fuel filler door goes. Late style. Spelled out also in the 6th edition. See Exterior. 9.
See Michael Hanson's pics on the bezel. John
