    Revisited - 65(66) side exhaust cover J-nuts

Back in Aug/Sep of '08 (thread link below) we were discussing factory attaching hardware.

At the time, I mentioned that a local friend has an original '66 N14 mid-April car; not an NCRS guy, but doing a body off. Well yesterday I finally went over and took some pics.

You can see that these particular J-nuts [#3880494 - post April '65] are square, and not welded but held in place by a series of bent tabs. All 6 nuts (per side) were the same; they were probably tapped for 10-24 machine thread screws, but on this car, someone had used sheet metal screws (which my friend drilled the heads off to remove the side cover and retainer strip.

IMO, these nuts are the same as shown in the prevous thread by John Hinckley (photos by Michael Hanson), but maybe by another supplier as they don't have the stylized "M" embossed.

Thumbnail of the clip removed (far right) shows the ground arc in the fiberglass doorsill to align this clip with the hole that was designed for non-side exhaust cars. Not as fancy as the rectangular dimensioned cutout shown in the AIM .
