Green Finish/Color on Fuel Pump Hose Clamps

Anyone know a source for the olive green colored paint that is found on the fuel pump/line hose clamps?

I've got a bunch of these original clamps with the square corners that I'd like to recondition and use in place of the the current repros that have the rounded corners.

    Thanks,

    James West

James, Dupont, zinc Chromate primer is the green. But I don't know if it's still made as most everything we like to use is history.
Try Moeller Motor spray primer. green zinc chromate on ebay for 10 buks buy it now. JD

Any hobby shop with Testor's model paints has about 20 shades of green.

          James,
Do a Google search for "A-802 Green" and Sky Geek will come up in the search and that is where I just got three cans of Tempo zinc oxide primer that is the perfect match for a mid year Corvette bird cage and I guess anything else that need to be green oxide.

            Hey James

is the color of the repros the same color as the originals? I picked up a can of green zinc phosphate etching primer but it wasn't close

The material used to color the springs clamps was not a paint, per se. It was a DYE. The dye was applied over the phosphate finish and more-or-less "infused" into it. The purpose of the dye was merely for easy assembly line identification. I don't know where to get the dye. It must be available somewhere, though.

                TOM-

I cheated. On my 74 L-48 the original fuel pump to fuel line hose still had it's original clamps and were very rusty on the exterior (nice on the interior) and needed to be replaced. I happen to be at an Auto Zone one day and saw a package of small spring hose clamps that contained both the green and black types with rounded ends for about $3.00 for a package of 9 I believe. I filed the rounded ends square and touched up the edges with Testor flat green paint #1164 (like John suggested) and replaced mine. In the 2 pictures below you can see the single tab has been filed and touched up and the double tab still has it's original rounded tabs. I think this would be a lot easier then sending them somewhwere (?) to be redone, if that's possible.

I can't say what color the clamps are because the finish is gone on mine, but I can tell you the color of the Tempo A-802 is an exact match to my original bird cage paint so if you have a clamp that has any dye left on, compare it to your cage primer. I don't know how well paint is going to hold up on gas line but it is worth a try.

Hint: if you read the owner's manual for your digital camera, you should find a section that talks about focus mode settings. In there, I think you'll find instructions for how to put your camera into 'macro' mode that'll make these closeup shots come out clear as a bell...

                          Martin,

Not a bad idea at all but, sometimes judges will detect the filing and a points lose will result there. Originals are out there and as usual the best option if not cost prohibitive. I know those 68/69 and 70-72 smarty pants judges try to detect if a rounded clamp(s) has been filed, but, those guys are kind of goofy.

                          Regards,

                          Mark
