Sal here is a picture of an original label with a 64 date. 65 is the same except the '65 in the upper right corner. Clete

Ahhh, good picture, Clete, but the text leaves something to be desired ('64 versus '65 date code)...

The 1965 model year began in calendar year 1964, so all '65 cars would have left the factory with '64 dated belt tags through December, 1964. Then, based on belt color, factory inventory on-hand, factory re-order arrivals from the supplier and the randomness of pull from inventory, the date on the label would have been intermixed '64 and '65 in January, 1965 and later until the remaining supply of older belts was exhausted.

That's why the NCRS Judging Guide reads this way on the subject:

"Note that many 1965 cars have been observed with a tag date of 1964."

Sorry Jack for being so short. I briefly explained in SALS post yesterday that 65's carried both types of labels, based on production date. You gave a much better explanation. My feeling is that based on when his car was built (June 65) his should have the 65 dated tag. Clete

Sal, Yes there was a date code. I didn't mention this because you won't find it in the judging manual, and most people will tell you they didn't exist on Irving belts.(reminds me of the X-files). I have witnessed several sets with an ink stamp across the label. Please observe the picture of an original label with the date still visible--26A-64 (4th week of June 1964).
This date is so obscure because it was hand stamped ink. Time and elements takes it toll and gradually fades it away. The fact that most Corvettes have been exposed to moisture sometime during their life adds to the disappearing act. Clete
