Anyone come up with a good way to secure the repop wiring harness straps to the firewall/inner fenders when they are made too small to stay in the factory holes? Also how would be the best way to get the strap part that loops over the wire and fastens back on itself to stay pressed down on the "stud" part of the strap?

Re: Repop engine wire straps
I drill a small hole it the pin that sticks through the inner skirt. I use a very thin washer and tiny cotter pin through the pin underneath the skirt in the wheellwell to hold it in place. Then a quick shot if undercoating to cover it up and hide the "fix".
I've found to keep the loop down may take some pre-bending without the harness there to get it in the right shape and secure. Then release it and install the harness. The repros are a much harder plastic than originals and are harder to keep in place.

Al:
I use a small piece of gray or black electrical heat shrink material. Just cut a small piece and heat shrink it to the plastic stud that goes through the fiberglass. Add a second layer if necessary. Undercoat is not really needed, since the gray color blends almost perfectly.........but you could use a short/quick shot of undercoat if desired.
As a side note, the repro harness straps are prone to flex and break. I found that only used/new originals work without breaking in some locations. Good luck.

Re: Repop engine wire straps
So I'm not the only one with this situation. The one that I have the most trouble with is holding the wires from the alternator as I suppose it gets pulled on some from engine movement, Another would be the coolant hose around the hood strut. Might try one of your suggestions myself.

Re: Repop engine wire straps
Stu, the coolant strap is definitely a problem and then the one that holds the headlight harness at the radiator. Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'll give them a try. Wonder if you heat the strap with a hair dryer while bending it in a loop to push back onto the pin if it will help it to keep the shape and not pull back off?- Top

Re: Repop engine wire straps
What straps are you guys using because the brand new ones I installed about two months ago have all broke at the curvature where they bend over the harness or coolant hose. No problem holding them in place, they tapped into the inner fenders fine.- Top

Re: Repop engine wire straps
They're now probably coming from that far away eastern place with no intention of quality, durability or accuracy.
For me lately........nothing fits, nothing lasts, and everything is more expensive.- Top

Re: Repop engine wire straps
Scott, the ones I have I purchased from CC back in the early 90s. I had 2 or 3 original straps that broke during removal during the restoration process. I have 3 original straps I purchased that I may install (were used)- Top

Re: Repop engine wire straps
Mike, the ones we're talking about have 2 "studs" on one end that are opposite each other. One stud pushes into the inner fender, while the long end of the strap, with the eyelets, pushes onto the exposed stud. the strap loops over the harness or coolant hose. Would post a picture but not that computer savy. Perhaps someone else will.- Top

Re: Repop engine wire straps
Thanks Tom, but I have those LICS on the car now which all broke in a month. Larry, you said you have tried three suppliers, have you tried the ones offered by Doc, his say injected molded in Connecticut which is fine if the proper material is used.- Top

Re: Repop engine wire straps
Al, my wire harness strap located on the fender near the alternator always kept coming loose and sliding down the harness, the loop section was always secured. so for easy access I removed the tire pushed the strap back into position and used a small soldering iron to melt the tip section that protrudes through fender tub. now it stays in place.
