    C2 Tie Rod audit question.

Since tie rods seems questions seem to be common right now I'll post mine. I was getting ready to media blast the steering parts for my '65 and notice what looks like yellow paint on the clamps. The funny thing is I only saw the paint on one side there was no paint on the other side that I could detect. The tubes and ends on both side look to be original. The JM mentions this and says some cars were audited and checked for proper torque. It also says they are not scored so the issue is really moot, yet still interesting. Was this common for the audit practice to only do one side and should I apply the paint again to the restored parts?

Perhaps I should have started off with this question, do the images below look typical for these audit markings?

The question is the JM says the ends, tubes, clamps and drag arm should be painted. Should they be painted as an assembly or the part painted then assembled? Should I remove the grease zerts prior to painting then installs them in the painted tie rod end unpainted?

    Mike -

The audit process was random - if you want to duplicate the markings, that's fine, or not - your call; won't affect judging. The midyear steering linkage was painted with chassis black as a complete assembly at Chevrolet-Buffalo just prior to shipment, and the grease zerks in the inner and outer tie rod ends were installed at St. Louis (the zerks should be free of paint).

Thanks John, It makes sense about the zerks it didn't seem like they would get paint on them. I'll probably extent the tie rod end on the tube to get the most paint coverage on the thread.
