Well, I successfully turned a 10 minute job into an afternoon affair again.
But it didn't turn out too bad:
Here's what I started with:
I'll bet that there are lots of drivers with a clip that looks like that. Mine broke off in 69.
The big problem I found was trying to set the little rivets in the inside:
No way to get in there with a rivet set punch and hammer, and be able to hold everything together with only two hands. I figured they used some type of pressing machine in the factory.
So I jury-rigged a rivet set out of a hole punch:
The backing for the rivet head was just a 3/8" bolt with a modified head:
The punching part was a 1/4" hole punch from a smaller punch set, which just nicely fit into the driving portion of this 3" offset hole punch.
It was pretty awkward to set the rivets with this contraption, and a little contact cement on the rivet and washer substituted for the third hand. But it didn't come out too shabby:
(Incidentally, when I took the original off, I found remnants of glue under the clip at each rivet. Looks like the factory guys also needed a third hand )
Had a fun afternoon
