AC Delco Speedo lube - where to get it?

I have been searching the posts, and many people mention using "AC Delco Speedo lube" on speedo cables. Is this stuff still available? If so, from where? Anyone have a p/n? I called a couple of Chevy dealers and they say they haven't heard of the stuff.

I checked a local auto parts and they have speedo cable OIL with graphite. I understood that I should use a grease rather than an oil.

    Tim -

I use "Kable-Ease", bought from Corvette Central many years ago (a tube lasts forever); it's a graphite lubricant made specifically for tach and speedo cables. Black, thick consistency.

I found the Kable Ease from CarQuest locally, so I will try that. Apparently the AC Delco stuff is no more.

        Tim-----

Going back 30 years I can't find any lubricant SPECIFIC for speedo or tach drive cables having ever been available through the GM parts system. It's possible that such a lubricant was available through the Delco parts system, though.

For an item like this, the chances are that if such a product ever was or is now available through Delco, it's the same thing as the "Kable-Ease" but in a Delco package.

I've been using plain old wheel bearing grease on my speedo cable for the past 42 years...........seems to work!

At one time, AC Spark Plug Division marketed "AC ST640 Speedometer Cable Lubricant" when they had their own dealer network. It was recommended also for tachometer cable and drive adapters. It may or may not have been available through AC Delco. As the other posts indicate, I am sure any aftermarket white grease will work just find.

How did you dip your engine in a large bucket of paint to get that so pretty ?

                    BIG bucket...

Finally bit the bullet and changed from Chevy Orange to Chevy Red last June. I didn't want to pull the engine for the job, so I pulled the carb, water pump pulley, ignition wires and brackets, starter, and exhaust manifolds. Then I cleaned the &^(*& out of the engine, and using a selection of art brushes from 1/8" to 1", put a coat of POR-15 Chevy Red on it. Excellent paint, takes hours to "set", which eliminated all trace of brush marks, even on the stamped items like throttle spring bracket and motor mount. Even the oil pan looks good. The hardest part was the front of the engine and water pump. I had to put a mirror tile in the fan shroud and paint everything backwards.. It took a couple weeks, an hour here and there, to avoid cramping from holding the little brushes at odd angles.

Re: AC Delco Speedo lube - where to get it?

Well, I purchased and started using on the tach cable the "Kable Ease" product mentioned above. It's consistency is that of a thicker oil, but not a grease. It is loaded with graphite particles, and it really a mess to use. It is sooty black in color and makes a mess unless you are very very careful. It does seem to work however just from the feel of the cable, but I don't have the car together yet to see how well. It is labeled as being specifically for speedo cables and the like, saying that it works at all temps and prevents the jumpy needles. We shall see...

                          Re: Speedo cable grease...

Well, I just visited the Fxxx dealer and asked for E6TZ-19581-A. They said it is no longer available as that number but, D2AZ-19590-A, a Teflon product was available in a one pound can for $25.99. I'm not sure I need a pound and I'm note sure about the Kable-ease due to the post about how messy it is.

                          Any other suggestions?

                          Thanks

                          Harry

                            Those "eff" people...

While it may well be true the E6TZ-19581-A 8oz is no longer available, I doubt very much the D2AZ-19590-A is listed as the "R/B (replaced by) item. You see, the "E6" means 1986, and the "D2" means 1972, so if anything, the E6 would have replaced the D2. More likely, the D2 is some other grease, like chassis grease, steering gear grease, or some such, but he was trying to be helpful, as in "making the sale". The E6 8oz would have been a lifetime supply. If you have to use the Kable-ease, get some "Invisible Glove", make sure you get it under your nails and it won't matter how bad the stuff is.
