    Paint Judging Guidelines

Where are the current judging guidelines for paint originality found. I know I have seen a copy in the past but I don't have it now and its not in the judging reference manual or the 1961-1962 judging guide.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

I believe they appeared in Roy Sinor's column in a Restorer a year or two ago. I know some copies have been passed out at judging schools at some Regional meets also.

      Terry,
Thanks, I found it in the Fall 2004 Restorer.

        Jeff,

I believe there is a more recent flow chart for judging paint than what is in the Fall '04 restorer. Hopefully someone will post a scan of it, or take the time to type it in. IIRC, it is has been reworked a good bit since the '04 version.

          Re: Paint Judging Guidelines

I'll try to provide a brief verbal until someone posts the flow chart.
Initially, there are two options, does the exterior paint appear to be factory applied material.
          1. If yes - full credit/no deduction.
If, yes and overrestored - up to 20% deduction
          2. If no - 100% deduction. THEN at this point, the judges may look at the "hidden areas", such as the door jambs and hood drip rails...
If those "hidden areas" have been properly dulled down to replicate the factory overspray - 50% may be credited back to that line item.
          Hope this helps

            Re: Paint Judging Guidelines

Mike is correct. I have the flow chart in front of me now, but I don't have access to a scanner at the moment.

The flow chart reads like this (the emphasis below is mine):

With the doors, hood, and trunk closed: Does the body paint material appear to be the factory applied material?
            • If YES, is appearance consistent with factory application methods (Observe Door Jambs, Hood ledge, Trunk Area)?
              • If yes, deduct 0 pts
              • If no, deduct 20% for over-restoration or under-restoration
            • If NO, is appearance consistent with factory application methods (Observe Door Jambs, Hood ledge, Trunk Area)?
              • If yes, deduct 50%
              • If no, deduct 100%

Important to note that the initial evaluation is made with the doors, hood, trunk lid for C-1's....closed.

                  Re: Paint Judging Guidelines

During Regional presentations, there has been some confusion as to the sequence of this process.
Judges are not to open the doors until after the 100% detemination is made.
Then they can open the doors and consider the 50% alternative.
The deduction scale as I mentioned is actually -0-, 20%, 100%, then back to 50% after examination of the "Hidden Areas".
                  Not -0-, 20%. 50%, 100% deductions.
                  Hope this helps.

I thought there was an automatic resizing to fit when posting photos on the TDB.

I prefer to re-size my own prior to posting, depending on the resolution of the original image; I have no idea what the site's "automatic" re-sizer does.

This is the most current flow chart. The standard deducts for paint are in the current JRM.
